Connected Learning

The power of Twitter is unbelievable, but the more  I use it and follow educational leaders and teachers from across the country I am blown away by its power. A perfect example is from this past weekend. I spent several hours trolling the back-channels of the ASCD12 conference in Philadelphia. Thanks to the power of Twitter and my PLN I felt as if I were in the city of Brotherly Love.

Principal Lyn Hilt @L_Hilt, HR Officer Tony Baldasaro @baldy7, and Illinois Teacher of the Year Josh Stumpenhorst @stumpteacher, were  just a few of the Tweets I followed and read this weekend.

Why did I follow them specifically?

1. Timely and relevant tweets. They were tweeting and sharing info directly from the sessions and keynotes they were attending.

2. Reflection. They posted blogs with their thoughts and reflections of their learning each day.

3. Resources. They shared notes they took, presentation materials, links, videos, and they introduced me to other connected leaders to follow as well.

I have been singing the praises of Twitter for a few months now. I joined in July to use as a tool to keep families informed, but it has grown to so much more. This weekend proved just how powerful of a learning tool Twitter really is to all who use and follow the connected leaders and learners of the Twitterverse.

Below are links to Lyn, Tony, and Josh’s blogs they shared over the weekend. Thanks to them I am a little smarter, and didn’t spend a dime, without having to actually go to Philly for the ASCD12 conference.

Connectedness, Sharing, and Elegance by @baldy7

This is just one of the posts from Tony. Once you are on his site if you look to the right side you will see a list of all the posts – labeled ASCD12. Using Cellphones in the K-12 Classroom, Anytime, Anywhere Learning, Brain Research and DI are just a few of them. Amazing and free!

Notes from the Anywhere, Anytime Learning by the Connected Principal Eric Sheniger @NHMS_Principal

Amazing notes and resources. For those of you that attended my PD session you may remember Eric from the video I showed about Twitter.

ASCD Part One: Global Competency by @stumpteacher

This particular post resonates with the SPS Learning Model.

Josh posted 4 parts and probably isn’t done yet as ASCD continues Monday, March 26th.  Click on Home and you will be directed to his most recent post. Scroll down to see all four posts from ASCD. He also has some tutorials/how-to videos on Twitter on his blog as well.

Relationships, Passion, and Pursuit of Learning by @l_hilt

This post by Lyn is her reflection from the first day of the ASCD conference and her three take-aways were:

  • Relationships rule.
  • Without passion, learning suffers.
  • Educators who connect have unlimited access to support systems, resources, and inspiration.

Your thoughts, comments, and questions are welcomed and appreciated.

Happy Monday!

Bill

  1. I feel the same way about Twitter. I started in November and I’m now addicted. I streamed the #edcampss group this weekend and was able to tweet with a few people who were there. At one point I couldn’t hear the answer to a question someone asked and I also wanted to know so I tweeted one of the participants and immediately had a reply. Powerful learning. Thanks for posting the info from ASCD so we can all share!
